La storia di Betlanovce Synagogue

Betlanovce is a small village in the Spišská Nová Ves district of eastern Slovakia, about ten kilometres east of Poprad. It is first mentioned in 1311 as Bethleem and was long a farming village of the Spiš lance-bearers, Catholic by the late eighteenth century. The only record of a synagogue here is an entry in the register of vanished monuments kept by the website Pamiatky na Slovensku, which files a 'Betlanovce - synagóga' among lost buildings, gives a map position in the built-up centre of the village and names the village website as its source. That website, as read in November 2026, says nothing about Jews or a synagogue, so the register's original information could not be traced.

The existence of a Jewish community is confirmed by its cemetery, which lies north-east of the municipal cemetery and holds 87 gravestones dated between 1885 and 1927. The synagogue was presumably the prayer house of this community, which seems to have lived in the village from the late nineteenth century into the inter-war years. Whether it was a purpose-built synagogue or a modest prayer house, when it was put up and when it disappeared are all unknown. It does not appear among the standing synagogues of Slovakia in Maroš Borský's survey or on the map of standing synagogues kept by synagogyslovenska.sk.

La comunità ebraica

Very little is documented about the Jews of Betlanovce. The late eighteenth-century gazetteer of András Vályi describes the inhabitants as Catholics, and Elek Fényes's geographical dictionary of 1851 counts 488 Catholics and 14 Lutherans, with no Jews listed. The village website gives 470 inhabitants in 1787 and 502 in 1828 and mentions a steam mill and a sawmill at the end of the nineteenth century, but no source links any Jewish family to them. The clearest evidence is the Jewish cemetery, whose oldest legible gravestone, according to the ESJF survey, dates from 1885 and whose newest dates from 1927. Eighty-seven stones were counted, which suggests a community of several families, possibly also serving Jews of neighbouring villages, active from the 1880s at the latest. No names of members, rabbis or officers, and no population figures by religion, were found.

Architettura e design

No description, photograph, plan or drawing of the Betlanovce synagogue was found. The Pamiatky na Slovensku register gives no dimensions, materials, date or style, and none of the other sources consulted mentions the building at all. Its size and form are therefore unknown. The register's map pin places it on a residential lane in the centre of the village, a few hundred metres west of the Jewish cemetery, which suggests that it stood among the houses rather than on the edge of the settlement, but the pin may only be approximate. There is no evidence of what the Betlanovce building looked like, how large it was or even whether it was free-standing, and no architect or builder is recorded.

La vita nella sinagoga

Nothing is recorded about religious life in the Betlanovce synagogue. No source names a rabbi, cantor, ritual slaughterer or teacher, or says whether the congregation was Orthodox or belonged to another trend. It is not known whether Betlanovce was an independent congregation or a branch of a larger community in the district, such as one of the nearby towns, which would have kept its registers and provided a rabbi. The cemetery, with burials between at least 1885 and 1927, shows that a burial society or a neighbouring community cared for the dead here for more than four decades. Whether regular services with a quorum of ten men were held in the village, or only on festivals, is unknown.

Distruzione

No source found states when or how the Betlanovce synagogue disappeared. The Pamiatky na Slovensku register lists it only as a vanished monument and gives no date, cause or actor, and the village's own history pages, the e-obce.sk village history, the slovensko.sk village profile and the Wikipedia articles on the village are silent about it. The cemetery records note that nobody has maintained the Jewish cemetery since the Second World War, which implies that the community did not survive the war, but this says nothing directly about the building. It may have been demolished, rebuilt beyond recognition or turned into an ordinary house at any time from the inter-war years to recent decades. Who removed it and when is not recorded.

Il destino della comunità

The fate of the Jews of Betlanovce is not described in any source consulted. The last dated gravestone in their cemetery is from 1927, and the JewishGen cemetery pages say that no one has looked after the cemetery since the Second World War, so the community apparently ended with the war. Whether its members had already moved away to towns such as Spišská Nová Ves or Poprad, or were still living in the village during the Second World War, could not be established; no deportation list, survivor testimony or Yad Vashem record specific to Betlanovce was found in this run. No Jewish community existed in the village after 1945. The cemetery, with 87 gravestones, many of them fallen, remains the only visible trace of the community.

Il luogo oggi

The exact plot of the synagogue is not known. The Pamiatky na Slovensku register places it at 48.979859, 20.390476, which OpenStreetMap shows as a residential lane in the centre of Betlanovce; no building is identified there as the former synagogue, and no remains or marker are recorded. About 300 metres to the east, north-east of the municipal cemetery, lies the Jewish cemetery, a small walled-off plot of about 163 metres in perimeter where gravestones stand and lie among trees. It was surveyed by ESJF and photographed for JewishGen, and was in very poor condition when visited. Establishing the synagogue's site will need the old cadastral maps of Betlanovce or local memory.
